Chapter 7

Anthony

Catherine seemed so much smaller than he remembered. She seemed to have shrunk a few inches since he saw her at the retirement home. Maybe it was because she had been standing next to her short little grandfather, but with her hunched shoulders and the worried expression on her face, he could tell that it was about something more.

“Don’t worry. It’s nothing professional; I just wanted to talk to you.” Anthony tried to calm her, feeling bad by causing her any amount of worry. He knew that feeling all too well—that feeling of wondering if he had done something wrong.

“Oh, that’s fine,” she said. Her voice was still anxious, and he felt something drop in his stomach. Maybe talking to her wasn’t a good idea, especially if it wasn’t for any professional reason. It seemed to just be making her uncomfortable.

Still, it was worth a shot.

“I just wanted to ask if . . . uh . . . if your grandfather, Charles, remembered anything about my Nana,” he asked, feeling his face burn with embarrassment. He didn’t like to talk about his personal life at work, and he definitely never expected that he would be talking about his Nana with a complete stranger.

But Catherine’s face lit up at the mention of her grandfather and his Nana.

“Alice?” she asked. It took him a moment for him to realize that, of course, she wouldn’t know Nana as Nana. Alice was his grandmother’s first name, but he barely knew her as that.

“Yeah. Alice,” he said lamely. Calling his grandmother Nana felt silly and childish now.

This was a mistake. He thought to himself. Why did he think he could make friends with the new nurse by asking her about her grandmother? It was the stupidest idea he had in a long time, and he felt himself getting angry with himself.

“Oh. It’s . . .” Catherine thought about it for a moment before she spoke, choosing her words carefully. “He remembers her from high school. He . . . says that he misses her a lot.”

“Ah. My grabdmother said the same about him. She said that she was very . . . fond of him when they were younger,” he said, hoping to escape the conversation as quickly as possible, at this point. The best thing to do now was to avoid her at all costs until he retired and then try to forget about it until he died.

Anthony was ready to turn and walk away when Catherine spoke up.

“Why did you want to ask me this?” There was genuine curiosity in her voice, and he was surprised to hear the lack of anything hurtful in her tone. He was certain that she had been judging him just a moment ago, but he wasn’t so sure about that now.

“I understand if it’s a bit strange. I’m just very close with my Nana and . . . it’s the first time I’ve ever seen her act like this. I’m just interested to see if this will go anywhere,” he explained.
